The Timeless Elegance of Musselmalet – A Collection Part II

Bukowskis now presents the second part of Börje Johansson’s extensive private collection of Royal Copenhagen's Musselmalet porcelain. The collection consists of several hundred carefully selected items acquired over the past 20 years. A Collection Part II includes over one hundred and fifty pieces, the majority of which are antique items in excellent condition. Here, you will find everything from traditional tableware to rarer pieces such as a water heater, a beer mug, rare flower pots, confectionery bowls, knife handles, and even a ring. A Collection Part I was sold in November 2024.

Börje Johansson’s collecting began many years ago when, at a local auction in southern Sweden, he spontaneously bid on a beautiful small dish. Over time, his fascination and knowledge of the elegant blue-and-white porcelain grew, resulting in a collection of many unique and carefully selected items.

For over 250 years, Royal Copenhagen has crafted porcelain with exceptional craftsmanship. Every step in the manufacturing process – from the first sketch to the final brushstroke – speaks to the meticulous and skilled workmanship that makes each piece unique. One of their most cherished and sought-after patterns is the so-called "Musselmalet" or “Blue Fluted”, known worldwide for its timeless elegance. Inspired by Chinese porcelain and decorated with stylized blue flowers on a white background, the Mussel-pattern has become a symbol of Danish porcelain history.

Under the leadership of Arnold Krog in the 1880s, the pattern gained new luster, with three distinct variants being developed: “Helblond” or “Full Lace” with a pierced lace rims, “Halvblond” or “Half Lace” with a painted lace rim in relief, and “Rifflet” or “Fluted” with an just the fluted relief. While the pattern is most commonly blue on a white background, it is also available in black, red, and green. These variations have made Musselmalet a timeless choice for both collectors and design enthusiasts, and a style that suits any home.
