Commissioned by art historian Åke Livstedt, the service was awarded the prestigious Excellent Swedish Design (Utmärkt svensk form) award in 1992.
Since 1991, the Nobel Service has been used annually at the Nobel Banquet in Stockholm. Schnapps glasses designed by Gunnar Cyrén has been added since then.
