From the Architect’s Studio

In a beautiful courtyard building in Stockholm’s Östermalm district was the studio of the late architect. With its generous windows, eclectic furnishings and quietly atmospheric character, the space evoked the artist’s studios of New York and the city’s celebrated, slightly rough-edged creative milieu.

Situated on the third floor of a former small-scale factory once devoted to the manufacture of horse-drawn carriages, the atelier was a remarkable setting for both work and inspiration. The expansive room was furnished with a discerning selection of objects, furniture and works of art. Tables and plan chests were layered with books and periodicals, architectural proposals and images gathered for inspiration. At the end of the day, the architect might stretch out on the patterned sofa, warming his feet by the black wood-burning stove.

More than a workplace, the atelier was a room for creativity, contemplation and conviviality. Over the years, our collector and his architectural firm undertook commissions throughout Sweden and abroad. Their work encompassed private residences and extensions, industrial buildings, office furniture and retail interiors. Across these varied projects ran a distinctive language of understated elegance, characterised by a refined yet distinctly Scandinavian aesthetic. Several were recognised with prestigious awards.

The architect was an avid visitor to galleries, artists’ studios and museums, and belonged to several art associations. Among the works gathered here are pieces by artists who were not only admired by him, but also counted among his friends. His assured eye and profound interest in art and design are reflected throughout the objects with which he chose to surround himself in the atelier.
