A Classic Selection

A Classic Selection is a new themed auction for high-quality classic art. It mainly features significant Swedish artists from the late 19th century and the turn of the 20th century, including, Helmer Osslund, Wilhelm von Gegerfelt, Karl Nordström, and Oskar Bergman. The auction highlights the breadth and creativity inherent in classic art. The last decades of the 19th century were a time of radical development in European art. At the conservative art academies in Sweden, history painting still held the highest regard. Young talents seeking a freer approach to painting looked abroad, mainly to France. Not least, female artists found much better conditions in Paris than at home. The art they discovered there was the new plein air painting. Thanks to new technology with oil paints in tubes, the new generation could gradually leave the studio to paint entire compositions outdoors. They set up their easels in forests, meadows, or on paths, creating their works with quick brushstrokes in small formats that captured the magic of the moment.
