Anna Mizak

“With my art I wish to convey that there is hope, both for the human being as an individual and for humanity as a whole; there is movement – a potential for change within her.” – Anna Mizak

Born in Poland, Anna Mizak received her education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and later at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. She settled in Sweden in 1968 and worked there as an artist until her passing in 2019. Mizak gained international recognition and exhibited extensively in Sweden and abroad; her work is, among other collections, represented at the Moderna Museet.

With the human figure at the centre of her creative practice, Mizak explored form. Over time, she simplified her expressive visual language until ultimately only a single sign remained – a simple symbol of the human being.

Mizak’s imagery found expression both in sculpture and through drawing and painting. The auction presents works that demonstrate the breadth of her artistry, across different materials and techniques. Her restrained style emphasises the graceful while also conveying a strong sense of movement. She skilfully mastered various materials such as bronze and marble, acrylic and charcoal. Despite her highly reduced formal language, her depictions of the human figure retain character and individuality. A common thread in both paintings and sculptures is their representation of movement. Her works are characterised by human bodies in rhythmic motion – like an expressive and sensual dance in repeated formations.

“To create art is a spontaneous need, an expression of what I feel.” – Anna Mizak
