Märta Lindblom, née Norberg, belonged to the generation of female artists who, around the turn of the twentieth century, established themselves in a Swedish art world undergoing change. She studied at Konstakademien in Stockholm from 1890 to 1894 and continued her studies in Paris. Like several of her female contemporaries, she sought out the new networks and exhibition contexts that enabled women to work professionally as artists. In 1901, she became a member of Svenska konstnärernas förening, and in 1911 she participated in the exhibition organised by Föreningen Svenska Konstnärinnor in Stockholm.

Today, relatively little is known about Lindblom’s artistic career, and only a small part of her oeuvre has been identified. Her artistic context, however, emerges more clearly through her friendship with Ester Almqvist. Their extensive correspondence spans the 1890s to the 1930s and bears witness to a longstanding bond between two professional female artists. Lindblom’s life and work thus also bring to mind the many female artistic careers from the period that have yet to be fully explored.
