Peter Frie has consistently chosen the path of colour and painting over the more conceptual currents of contemporary art. Since the 1970s, he has developed a deeply personal visual language where landscape, memory, and the inherent power of colour are central.
Fries emerged during a period when much of Swedish art was moving towards idea-based expressions, but he remained committed to painting as an existential and sensory medium. In his works, we often encounter the open landscape, a motif that may evoke the tradition of Nordic plein air painting. However, for Fries, nature is never merely depicted. It is experienced, filtered through memory and emotion, and transformed by the intensity of colour.
