Pierre Boncompain, born in 1938 in Valence, Provence, is a distinguished representative of the modern School of Paris. Spanning more than six decades, his artistic career is defined by a distinctive interplay of colour, form and poetic sensibility.

Boncompain studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs and subsequently at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Although many of his works were created in Paris, Provence remains a constant source of inspiration. The light, landscape and way of life of the south of France recur throughout his paintings and pastels, often in the form of nudes, still lifes and landscapes.

His visual language is characterised by intense colours, simplified forms and expressive lines. Terracotta, ochre, violet, deep red and blue create a warm and luminous palette in which everyday subjects acquire a poetic and sensual dimension. The clear, light-filled use of colour recalls Matisse, while the intensity of his palette evokes Gauguin.

Boncompain’s art combines the formal awareness of modernism with the timeless light and life-affirming sensuality of Provence - an art in which the everyday is transformed into something extraordinary.
