Håkan Rehnberg, born in 1953 in Gothenburg, holds a significant position in Swedish contemporary art. Since the late 1970s, he has developed a consistent artistic practice encompassing painting, sculpture and spatial objects. He studied at Kungliga Konsthögskolan in Stockholm and has been a member of Kungliga Akademien för de fria konsterna since 2000.
Central to Rehnberg’s painting is his use of oil paint on acrylic glass, a material he has worked with since the early 1990s. The smooth surface gives the paint a particular fluidity and makes each intervention distinctly present. Through layers, overpainting and interruptions, images emerge in which precision and spontaneity coexist.
Rehnberg has exhibited at a number of Swedish and international institutions, including Moderna Museet and Liljevalchs in Stockholm, as well as at the Sydney Biennale. Throughout his artistic practice, questions concerning surface and space, visibility and concealment, and the relationship between the artistic act and the finished work recur.
