Anshelm Schultzberg spent most of 1891 on the enchanting island of Capri, where he found motifs for a series of paintings: coastal landscapes with turquoise water, farmsteads surrounded by pergolas and lush greenery, and, as in the painting offered at auction, a dramatic view over the Bay of Naples, with powerful waves and Vesuvius rising in the background. He writes the following in his “Capri Memories”, published in Ord och Bild in 1896:
“To Capri, the most wondrous of islands, the gaze is drawn. It is there that it is captivated the first moment you arrive in the Bay of Naples – and there that it is drawn when you leave the region. And there my thoughts will always soar whenever the word Italy is mentioned.”
