Outi Ikkala is, together with Lars-Gunnar Nordström and Sam Vanni, one of Finland’s foremost concrete artists. She exhibited not only in Europe and the United States, but also in Latin America. Measuring one by one metre, the fine painting offered at auction is an exceptionally fine example of her concrete art.

Outi Ikkala studied at The Free School (1955–1956) and at Finland Konstakademi (1956–1960) under Unto Pusa and Sam Vanni. She was also a member of The Dimension Group.

Ikkala drew creative inspiration from the modernism of 1950s New York. Many artists fled Europe for New York, resulting in an extensive and creative fusion of talent and ideas. Influential Europeans such as Piet Mondrian, Josef Albers and Hans Hoffmann inspired American artists in New York and influenced the cultural development of the United States for decades. Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Frank Kline, Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still and Adolph Gottlieb were the dominant artists, while female artists such as Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell and Louise Bourgeois have also received recognition in retrospect.

Outi Ikkala is represented in, among others, the Finnish National Gallery Collection at Ateneum Art Museum in Helsingfors, Nationalmuseet i Oslo, The British Museum, City of Pori Art Collection, Blanton Museum of Art and Maire Gullichsen Art Foundation Collection.
