The catalogue for this spring’s dynamic and colorful hammer auction with contemporary art is here: Contemporary Art & Design. The selection is carefully curated and hand picked by Bukowskis art experts to present an unique selection of contemporary art, prints, photography and sculpture. We have spoken to Bukowskis art specialist in contemporary art, Louise Wrede, about the coming hammer auction that takes place April 19th.

Which are your four personal favorites among the art work at Contemporary Art & Design?

108. TOMÁS SARACENO, ”Iridescent Planet”.
An artist from Argentina who was educated to an architect prior to when he started his artistic career. Today he works with different disciplines such as nature science and he is impacted by urban planning and our relationship to nature. ”Iridescent Planet” is a sculpture which is included in Saraceno’s projects 32SW/Flying Garden/Air-Port-City/Irdiscent, which is a city built up in the air. In the year of 2010 the artist had an exhibition in Bonniers Konsthall where he recreated the black widow’s spider net in a scale 1:17 and in the same time Saraceno also exhibited a version of the ”Ididescent Planet”.

100. LENA CRONQVIST, ”Grimaser, Mun”.
”Grimaser, mun” is a fantastic sculpture in real size that picture a girl who is making funny faces with her mouth. A teaser more or less. The artist Cronqvist has created a sculpture that affects the viewer. In her artistry she mainly explore children’s vulnerability, though in the same time she creates her sculptures as highly capable and strong-minded individuals with ability to make their own choices.

81, 86, 98, 99. YLVA OGLAND.
Swedish artist Ylva Ogland has this been very up-to-date this spring with her exhibition at CF Hill in Stockholm. In Bukowskis Contemporary Art & Design auction we have four art works from Ogland, together they provide a great span through-out her artistry where she process memories, mythologies and parallell worlds. Ogland has mutated herself with her mirror twin Snöfrid, and now she call herself Ylva Snöfrid.

90. JAN HÅFSTROM, ”Mr Walker”.
The ironic ”Mr Walker”, the alias of Phantom, is a figure that Håfström has painted many times. In his paintings you will always see him from the side or from the behind, preferable on the run. This exact painting from 2004, one of the earlier portraits, is from when Håfström started to paint them around year the of 2000. The colors are especially beautiful in the ”Mr Walker” included in this auction.

If I would like to start collecting contemporary art, what should I have in mind?
My advice to someone who would like to collect contemporary art: go with what you like in a pure aesthetic point of view and with art you can conceive to have in your home for a while. Another advice is: go and see as much art as you possibly can, sooner and later you will figure out and get a hint of what you like, along with building an understanding around different artistries. A good start is to go to our viewing of Contemporary Art & Design with paintings, sculpture, photography and prints that spans through a wide segment of Swedish and international artists that are alive.

What is it that make contemporary art so interesting for you?
Contemporary art is interesting to because of its wide range of different art forms along with the fact that contemporary art is a mirror of the time we live in. At the moment the most interesting about it is that there are several artists that works in the digital sphere such as Cécile B. Evans, Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin along with Parker Ito (who is included in the auction). They are all born in the 1980s and they work with space and digital in different ways – and they have already exhibited in major museums. Check them out!
