Evelina Kroon – Artist

What does art mean to you?
I was lucky to be introduced to art early in my life, which is why it has become very important to me. I find that art is fulfilling, inspiring and formative, both as a practitioner and as an observer.

How do you approach colours and patterns in your work?
I find it interesting to place myself on the boundary between satisfying harmony and disgraceful disharmony. When something is perfect it often becomes boring, which is why I try to leave a space for defects. It can be a symmetrical pattern that ends asymmetrical or a colour that takes to much space. I work a lot with hierarchies between materials and colours, repetition and padding.

How did you begin your work with the colour scheme of Bukowskis’ showrooms?
It all started with a collaboration I had with Bukowskis and the fashion brand Little Liffner during Stockholm Fashion Week earlier this fall. I did the colour scheme for one of the showrooms, which seems to have been appreciated since the room has been preserved. When I started to develop a colour scheme for the auction Important Winter Sale I proceeded from the colours in that room. I have also been inspired by wilted dahlias and a housing ad. I did not exactly know what kind of artworks that would be displayed, which is why I could inadvertently develop a certain mood and colour palette. That is probably reflected in my, in some ways unconventional colour choices, but in the end, it works surprisingly well with the fantastic curated selection.

In what way can a colour scheme affect the art or the observer of the artwork? Is the White Cube dead?
It is a myth that art has to be displayed on white walls. I believe that my choices of colours are axiomatic rather than controversial or provocative. At the same time, there is already a tradition and a whole bunch of rules about how to curate art, but the experience of colours is subjective! Bukowskis was brave to invite me and I hope that the result can open up for exciting conversations. I don’t believe that the White Cube is dead though, but that permitting and including rooms are increasingly welcome. Art is for everyone.
