Great interest in ceramics, glass and Swedish Modern

Axel Salto, Hans Hedberg, Barbro Nilsson and Josef Frank are just a few designer stars whose design are amongst the most sought-after on the Swedish market as well as the International. The Design department offered new record prices and the sale of the vase “Knoppande stil” for Royal Copenhagen received energetic applause when reaching an astonishing final price of 2 237 500 SEK.

We are very pleased with the final price of this magnificent stoneware vase by Axel Salto, with its unusual large size, perfect condition and glaze in a beautiful shimmery mussel blue. There are collectors of Axel Salto ceramics all around the world and the final price is the highest in Scandinavia for the artist, says Eva Seeman, Head Specialist Design and Works of Art.

Magnificent ceramics by Wilhelm Kåge and masterly glass by Simon Gate were among other highlights in the auction along with Josef Frank’s internationally acclaimed “Flora” cabinet and sideboard for Firma Svenskt Tenn, included in the curated department featuring Swedish Modern.

It is wonderful that there is such a notable demand for Swedish Modern, both among our Swedish and international customers. My personal favourites in the department were the leather-covered Otto Schulz-cabinets, both rare and interesting, Eva Seeman, Head Specialist Design and Works of Art continues.

Further, having reached a final price of 367 000 SEK, the "Leopardo" chest of drawers with lithographically decorated surfaces by the Italian design icon Piero Fornasetti, was another highlight in the auction. Also, the chair and ottoman by the Danish Frits Henningsen, was a top lot with its final price of equally 367 000 SEK.

The department for carpets also included a curated theme to celebrate Märta Måås Fjetterström, whose studio turns 100 years. However, with an outstanding final price of 490 000 SEK, the top lot in the department, were the seven compositions of tapestries by Barbro Nilsson which ifeatured ”Bäckahästen”, a symbol for the forces of nature.

The bidding on Barbro Nilsson’s wonderful suite of weaved tapestries was lovely. The tapestries were bought by the same customer who also bought the single tapestry. The single tapestry also came from Sydkraft’s well-known building in Malmö, Sweden. Big carpets by Märta Måås-Fjetterström and Marianne Richter also reached prices high above estimate, says Anette Granlund, Head Specialist Carpets, Textiles and Islamic Works of Art.
