Karin Aringer chooses her favourites from Contemporary Art & Design

The art section of the auction includes works by famous artists such as Andy Warhol, John Chamberlain, Jean-Michel Basquiat and David Hockney together with Swedish artists such as Ola Billgren and Lena Cronqvist. Prior to Contemporary Art & Design we have spoken to specialist at contemporary art and photography, Karin Aringer.

For new collectors who want to start collecting contemporary art and photography, which objects among the lots in this auction could be a good start?
I always advise new collectors to look a little extra at classic Swedish photography. These are good quality images produced analogously in dark rooms. Classic black and white photography is much more popular abroad and practically undervalued here in Sweden. Some great examples of this genre are Gunnar Smoliansky's image of Kocksgatan and the three 1930s motifs by Emil Heilborn. Dawid's three motifs from the series "Work name sculpture" are works I can also deeply recommend.

In this auction, there are also many exciting works by younger artists that are at the start of their careers. Among other works, I can recommend Maria Nordin's watercolor "De Obekväma II", Ragnar Persson's drawings and Lisa D Manner's small painting "DYKE". Anastasia Ax also feels exciting. She works primarily with drawings, collages and installations.

Which artwork should you invest a little extra in if you are a more established collector?
The market for Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Hockney, Banksy and Per Kirkeby has been very strong in recent years, so these works may be of interest to an established collector with a large budget. The sculpture by John Chamberlain is indeed a contemporary classic. Institutions and international collectors are fighting to include something of him in their collections. It is not that often such an internationally sought-after piece is sold on the Swedish market, and it is extra fun that this is a piece that has not been on the auction market before.

If we look at the Swedish artists represented in the auction, I think an established collector should take a closer look at Marie-Louise Ekman's fine work "Staden I". Everything is right with it: the subject, the frame and the year. Marie-Louise Ekman has a very personal way of expression and has really made an impression on Swedish art history. With the large retrospective exhibition at the Moderna Museet this year, even more eyes have opened to her art.

What can we expect of the viewing for Bukowskis Contemporary Art & Design?
This is an unusually large quality auction with many fine works, which is always a great breadth of art where virtually all genres are represented. It's just this mix that makes it extra fun to walk around the exhibition, I think. You will find everything from video works to sculpture, so chances are something will appeal just to you!

Helene Billgren, "På väg till landskap"
I admire Helene Billgren's imagination and creativity. She can work with virtually any material and changes the work to an unmistakable Billgrenian expression. She is currently quite topical with a large exhibition with works from her entire career at Liljevalch's Art Hall in Stockholm.

Dan Wolgers, "What's wrong?", 1993
This will certainly lift your mood in true Dan Wolgers spirit. "What's wrong?" is a series of mounted photographs originally intended for educational exercises. I every tableau, which each represents everyday situations, there is something wrong.

Lena Cronqvist, Sculpture group, 6 pieces
Lena Cronqvist's six bronze girls are very fine originals! Cronqvist has really captured the body language of children in their elementary school age and has succeeded in giving each each sculpture her own personality. The girls really add something to a room or garden regardless of whether they stand alone or in a group.
