Roy Lichtenstein
– an icon of Pop Art
At this autumn’s Contemporary Art & Design auction Bukowskis is honoured to present several unusual print works by the Pop Art icon Roy Lichtenstein. The works stretch from the 1960s up until the 9190s. From the very beginning, Lichtenstein was fascinated by how different techniques and printing methods could capture his artistic vision. Like many of his contemporaries, Lichtenstein explored where the line between ‘reproduction’ and ‘original work’ could be drawn; challenging the traditional idea of what counted as authentic work.
› 403. Roy Lichtenstein, ”Modern Head #2”, from: ”Modern Head series”. Estimate 125 000 – 150 000 SEK.
› 402. Roy Lichtenstein, ”Nude in the woods” from: ”Expressionist Woodcut Series”. Estimate 125 000 – 150 000 SEK.
Lichtenstein began his career as an artist taking inspiration from the aesthetics of comic books, however throughout his life he experimented with many different styles. The collaboration with G.E.L. in California made a big impact on his production of prints; helping him to explore new possibilities and techniques that led to him creating print editions that today are sought-after across the world.
In 1988 he executed the series Imperfects – geometric abstractions of eccentric shape – which perfectly exemplified his later production methods. The series is described as follows in his Catalogue Raisonné:
› 398. Roy Lichtenstein, ”Mirror #6”. Estimate 80 000 – 100 000 SEK.
› 400. Roy Lichtenstein, ”Before the Mirror”. Estimate 80 000 – 100 000 SEK.
