Bukowskis strengthens its leading position in Contemporary Art & Design

Collections and international works attracted bidders globally

The auction resulted in seven lots exceeding SEK 1 million with international high final prices for contemporary artists such as Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann, Banksy, Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg, and new world records for Swedish artist Barbro Östlihn and photographer Terry O’Neill. Bukowskis can also present a new world record for Andy Warhol, “Three portraits of Ingrid Bergman by Andy Warhol”, a triptych that reached a final price of SEK 1,898,750.

– Bukowskis' record for Barbro Östlihn is one of many highlights among contemporary female artists, whose final prices have been established through Bukowskis Fine Art auctions. Tonight’s auction resulted in seven lots exceeding SEK 1 million, where I especially want to highlight Tom Wesselmann’s “Study for Bedroom Painting # 25”, Andy Warhol’s two toy paintings “Ship” and “Robot”, and Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg’s “Hippos and Crocodiles”. The results strengthen our position and confirm that the market is vital for international contemporary art, says Louise Wrede, Specialist Contemporary Art.

– Another new international record was set by the master of portraits, the British photographer Terry O’Neill when Bukowskis sold the iconic image of Brigitte Bardot for a final price of SEK 637,500. The photograph accounted for the departments most expensive work sold, and portraits were generally in high demand. Some fine examples are Bruno Ehr’s portrait of Karl Carl XVI Gustaf, Dominique Tarlé’s image of Mick Jagger and Giséle Freund’s classic author and artist portraits. Among the contemporary conceptual photography, Nathalia Edenmont’s beautiful image with lilies, Michel Comte’s fast-paced image of the woman and zebra together with Miriam Bäckström’s image from the series “Mirrors”, attracted several bidders, says Karin Aringer, Specialist Photography and Contemporary Art.

– A new world record of the “Bergman Suite” by Andy Warhol and successful results for all seven works by Roy Lichtenstein, with several bidders from all over the world, shows that we can sell prints at international high final prices. Many of the buyers were significant collectors, says Marcus Kinge, Specialist Prints.

The Nordic region’s biannual Fine Art auction for contemporary art and design continues to build its leading position with increased international interest.
