Highlights from the design department at Modern Art & Design

After successful auctions for contemporary art and design, Bukowskis continues the live season with Modern Art & Design – the Nordic region's largest auction for modern art and design.

The first day of the auction was led by the design department, which presented an outstanding lineup of internationally sought-after design and high final prices for designers such as Josef Frank, Uno Åhrén, Carl-Axel Acking, and Georges Jouve.

White Glove for Svenskt Tenn

The section included a specially commissioned cabinet by Josef Frank from the 1940s, decorated with hand-coloured engravings of fauna and flora from Friedrich Justin Bertuch’s “Bilderbuch für Kinder”, which sold for a final price of nearly 2.6 million SEK. Another lot exceeding one million was achieved for Josef Frank’s chest of drawers “Flora”, which sold for a final price of 1.2 million SEK, setting a new world record.

Among the pewter objects, there was a rare bowl with engraved decoration by Tyra Lundgren from 1932, a table lamp by Anna Petrus, and a floor lamp by Björn Trägårdh, which attracted lively bidding. The department closed as a White Glove, which means that all objects were sold.

Scandinavian and International Designers

The design department presented sought-after items from some of the 20th century's foremost Scandinavian and international designers, such as Dagobert Peche, Hans J. Wegner, and Axel Einar Hjorth.

From Axel Einar Hjorth, we saw a collection of pine cabin furniture from the “Utö”, “Lovö”, “Sandhamn”, and “Skoga” series with fine provenance. Among the Danish design objects were armchairs, chairs, tables, and sideboards by icons like Fritz Hansen, Arne Vodder, and Hans J. Wegner. Other highlights in furniture and works of arts included an armchair by Uno Åhrén that sold for several times its estimate, a pair of stools by Sidney Gibson, and a very rare gilded mirror from 1922 by Dagobert Peche for Wiener Werkstätte.

Georges Jouve Exceeds Expectations

The most spectacular item in the ceramics department was undoubtedly the table lamp "Trois Boules" by Georges Jouve from the 1950s, which, after intense telephone bidding, sold for a final price of 700 000 SEK. Another item that exceeded expectations was a wall sculpture in the shape of a butterfly by Birger Kaipiainen, which sold for five times its estimate, reaching a final price of 450 000 SEK.

Sought-after Swedish Textiles

Among the highlights from the carpets and textiles department, we can mention "Ängarna" by Märta Måås-Fjetterström and "Strålblomman, grön" and "Röda rabatten" by Barbro Nilsson. The latter is the first "Röda rabatten" that was woven and delivered to the customer in December 1944. After lively bidding, the final price reached 462 500 SEK.

Acking, Notini, and Bergström

As the market leader in the Nordic region for Modern Scandinavian design lighting, Bukowskis also presented an extensive section and brilliant results for fixtures by Erik Tidstrand, Carl-Axel Acking, Harald Notini, Hans Bergström, and others this season.

Highlights included a chandelier by Hans Bergström that sold for 10 times its estimate (final price 300 000 SEK), as well as several floor lamps by Acking, one of which sold for a final price of 338 000 SEK.

During the spring live auctions for Contemporary Art and Design, Important Timepieces, and Modern Art & Design, Bukowskis has auctioned art, design, and watches totalling 146 million SEK (including fees) and achieved 21 million listings.
