Peter Dahl, "Litet kalas"

Peter Dahl (1934–2019) occupies a unique position in Swedish art history through his ability to combine narrative joy with a keen observation of the social spaces of his time. After studying at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm and experiencing an early breakthrough period in the 1960s, he developed a visual language where literary references, art historical borrowings, and a vibrant realism converge in dynamic and often bustling compositions.

A recurring motif in Dahl's work is the restaurant interior—a scene where people, roles, and relationships emerge in a concentrated slice of urban life. Here, he depicts not only the physical character of the environment but also its social dramaturgy: glances that meet, bodies in motion, conversations that are suggested rather than spoken. For Dahl, the restaurant becomes a place where the public and the private merge, where everyday life and celebration coexist.

With a rich colourism and a detail-rich narrative, Dahl captures these environments with both warmth and precision. His work bear traces of both art historical predecessors and contemporary popular culture, yet remain deeply rooted in a Swedish reality. The painting presented in this auction "Litet kalas" is not only documents a time and a place but also embodies the human experiences that unfold in the scene —with humour, presence, and a subtle sense of the theatrical.

Peter Dahl’s work is held in collections including the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Malmö Art Museum, the portrait collection at Gripsholm Castle and the Gothenburg Museum of Art. Over the years, he has held a large number of solo exhibitions in Sweden, and his work has attracted considerable attention at both exhibitions and auctions. He is today regarded as one of the most prominent figures in Swedish contemporary art.

Estimate: 200 000 - 250 000 SEK

Peter Dahl, "Scenen"

Dahl’s art is marked by a strong interest in social issues and human behavior. He often depicts intimate scenes from upper-class life, despite not belonging to that milieu himself. In his visual world, elegant gatherings frequently appear in festive settings such as restaurants, theaters, opera houses, as well as nightclubs and bars. The allure of nightlife—along with its darker side of decadence and tragedy—recurs in several works, especially during the 1980s. With great psychological sensitivity and technical freedom, he moves between different historical eras in his painting.

Among his artistic influences are Edvard Munch, Francisco Goya, Nicolas Poussin, and François Boucher, with whom he often engages in a visual dialogue in his works. His expression is characterized by a style that is both expressionist and realistic, where vivid colors and fluid brushstrokes create sensual figurative compositions in which forms sometimes seem to merge.

Peter Dahl’s major breakthrough came a few years before the painting "Scenen" (“The Scene”), which is included in this auction. The breakthrough followed a widely noted traveling exhibition in which his works were shown in several locations across Sweden, Norway, and Finland, receiving great acclaim from both critics and the public.

In "Scenen", Dahl portrays a sea of people intently following an ongoing performance. At the center of the image is the illuminated stage, where a woman in a floor-length blue dress is led by an enthusiastic conductor dramatically raising his arms. The painting is characterized by deep, saturated colors and expressive brushstrokes that heighten the sense of movement and presence. As is often the case in Dahl’s art, the woman stands at the center, and the blue and cerise dresses help draw the viewer into the unfolding scene.

Lennart Jirlow, On the balcony, Provence

Lennart Jirlow was born and raised in Stockholm. His unusual surname can be traced back to his grandfather, Oscar Andersson, a naval petty officer who lived on Skeppsholmen. Wanting to stand out, he adopted the name Jirlow from the nautical terms gir (turn) and lov (windward). At the age of nine, Lennart Jirlow painted his first oil painting, which he managed to sell for 5 kronor. After that, he spent his weekly allowance on brushes and panels. Becoming an artist was his goal—and he achieved it. In 1952, at just 16 years old and the youngest student that year, he was admitted to Konstfack.

Two years later, Jirlow embarked on his first major European journey. He visited the Netherlands to study Rembrandt and then traveled on to cities including Paris, Naples, and Florence. In Florence, he stayed for four years to study at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze. In 1958, he returned to Stockholm and later that same year held his debut exhibition at Gallery Modern konst i hemmiljö on Strandvägen.

During the 1960s, Jirlow continued to exhibit regularly, including in Gothenburg and Stockholm. Even more significant, however, was his first exhibition at the Galerie des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1965, which became his true breakthrough. By this time, his style had developed into the detailed, colorful, and seemingly naïve expression we recognize today, with motifs centered on everyday French life: interiors of family-run bistros, idyllic countryside hotels with flower-filled balconies, bakers with their baguettes, chefs in their kitchens, and gendarmes in uniform. The combination appealed to French audiences, and the exhibition was noted in both French and Swedish media. A local magazine described him as “the Swedish artist who shows the French their France,” while the newspaper Expressen featured a full-page spread, generating significant attention back home.

At the time of his breakthrough in France, Jirlow had already been living for a year in Provence. His success in Paris led to several exhibitions in the French capital during the 1970s, and it wasn’t long before he acquired a home and studio there as well. His motifs revolve primarily around the small pleasures of everyday life: a visit to a restaurant, bistro, or wine cellar; coffee in a pergola; an outing by archipelago boat; or a walk in the park or along a palm-lined promenade. Jirlow’s paintings are filled with a joy of storytelling, and their common thread—almost without exception—is a love of color and of life.
