Contemporary Art & Design presents James Rosenquist | October 27–28

"Little Welcome to the Water Planet II"

James Rosenquist’s painting “Little Welcome to the Waterplanet II” is part of his extensive project “Welcome to the Water Planet”, a prominent series of large-scale prints, collages and paintings that he created between 1987 and 1989. The imagery balances realism with kaleidoscopic abstraction, a combination characteristic of Rosenquist’s artistic style as a whole.

The subject of the auction exists in several different versions, including a larger oil painting on canvas entitled “Welcome to the Water Planet II”, measuring an impressive 254 × 167.6 cm and also dating from 1987. It was preceded by a charcoal sketch on paper and a colour study executed in mixed media and collage. The latter remains in The Collection of the Estate of James Rosenquist.

This working process is well documented. Rosenquist sought to prepare for his paintings by sketching and experimenting, allowing him to arrive at the most effective composition and develop a clear sense of what he wished to create and convey through his work.

The title of the series may bring to mind a science-fiction film, but it naturally refers to the planet Earth, our home and the only known planet with liquid water. In this series, Rosenquist explores the Earth from new perspectives, as seen from outer space. He imagines how the world might appear through the eyes of visiting aliens. The result is a balance between the planet’s natural beauty and the threats posed by human consumption, pollution and ecological destruction.

Even in Rosenquist’s early works, which depicted the remnants of an expanding consumer culture, he explored his thoughts on the future fate of both humanity and the natural world. The imagery presents a lush, exotic landscape that is simultaneously threatened by scientific progress. Detailed depictions of beautiful exotic flowers are often juxtaposed with the visual language of advertising and objectified bodies. Surreal plants are combined with dark starry skies and nebulae. Beautiful female faces emerge through what appear to be cut-out holes or tears in the canvas. Through his distinctive artistic language, Rosenquist succeeds in bringing together the beauty of the human form and that of flowers without the result feeling clichéd.
