The Art Department – 12 lots exceeding one million SEK

The Art Department presented works by some of the most significant artists of the 20th century. Highlights included “Påskafton på turisthotellet” by Bror Hjorth, a monumental painting by Gösta Adrian-Nilsson, “Cirkus” by Einar Jolin, as well as “Composition à l'oiseau, esquisse” by Fernand Léger, which achieved a final price of SEK 3.6 million.

Works that exceeded expectations and achieved million-value results included “Ballerina på vit häst” by Béla Kádár, “Maternelle” by Fahrelnissa Zeid, and "Den drunknade flickan I" by Nils von Dardel, which sold for several times its estimate, achieving a final price of SEK 3.2 million.

Within prints and multiples, highlights included exceptional works such as “Buste de Femme au corsage blanc” by Pablo Picasso, as well as “With Hat”, from “Ingrid Bergman”, and “Tomato-Beef Noodle O’s”, from “Campbell’s Soup II”, by Andy Warhol.

World Record at the Design Department

An exceptional desk, designed for Nordiska Kompaniet’s Les Arts Décoratifs Suédois boutique in Paris in 1928, achieved a new world auction record after lively bidding, selling for a final price of SEK 1,200,000. The desk formed part of an important private collection of furniture and works of art dating from the 1920s to the 1940s. Comprising 48 carefully selected objects acquired with great passion over five decades, the collection reflects a period that came to define the history of Swedish design.

Other highlights from the collection included a gilded folding screen painted by ceramic artist Einar Luterkort, a pewter mirror by Björn Trägårdh for Firma Svenskt Tenn, an elmwood chest of drawers by the same designer exhibited at the Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg in 1932, as well as a rare “Estelle” armchair by Gustaf Axel Berg.

The department also presented sought-after furniture and objects by Carl Malmsten, Axel Einar Hjorth and Firma Svenskt Tenn, alongside a substantial lighting section featuring rarities by designers including Harald Notini, Carl-Axel Acking and Hans Bergström.

Highlights from the ceramics department included a major private collection of Farsta ware by Wilhelm Kåge, Jugend ceramics by Hilma Persson-Hjelm, and a sculpture in the form of a large apple half signed by Hans Hedberg.

Among the glass highlights were a collection of cast sculptures by Edvin Öhrström, art glass by Bertil Vallien, and richly engraved bowls by Simon Gate and Edward Hald for Orrefors.

The Carpets and Textiles Department

The Carpets and Textiles Department presented a number of exceptional works this season. Highlights included two carpets by Margareta Sundbom Eichenholz, one of which achieved a final price of SEK 468,000.

The department also featured several highly sought-after carpets by textile artists Märta Måås-Fjetterström and Barbro Nilsson, which realised strong final prices at auction.

The Silver Department

Interest in silver was exceptionally strong, and the department achieved high final prices for works by some of the foremost designers of the 20th century. Highlights included a pair of elegant candlesticks from Georg Jensen, which sold for a final price of SEK 300,000, as well as works by Wiwen Nilsson, Olle Ohlsson and others.
