Platinum has played a transformative role in the history of jewelry design. Introduced more widely in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it quickly became prized for its exceptional strength and durability. Unlike gold or silver, platinum could securely hold gemstones with very fine prongs, allowing jewelers to use less visible metal and create lighter, more delicate settings. This made it possible to craft elegant, airy designs that emphasized the brilliance of the stones, a hallmark of Edwardian and Art Deco jewelry.
