The Timeless Elegance of Musselmalet – A Collection Part I

Bukowskis presents Börje Johansson’s extensive private collection of Royal Copenhagen's Musselmalet porcelain. The collection consists of several hundred carefully selected items, which will be sold in two unique themed auctions and at the live auction, Important Winter Sale. A Collection Part I includes over two hundred pieces, most of which are older items, more than a hundred years old, and in very fine condition. Here, you’ll find everything from traditional tableware to rarer pieces such as celery pots, the famed ice dome, and even matchbox holders. A Collection Part II will follow later in the spring, in March 2025.

Börje Johansson’s collecting journey began many years ago when he spontaneously bid on a beautiful butter dish at a local farm auction in southern Sweden. Over time, his fascination and knowledge of this elegant blue and white porcelain grew, resulting in a collection filled with many unique and carefully chosen items.

For over 250 years, Royal Copenhagen has created porcelain of outstanding craftsmanship. Every step in the production process—from the first sketch to the final brushstroke—testifies to a meticulous and skilled artistry that makes each piece unique. One of their most admired and sought-after patterns is the so-called "Musselmalet," renowned worldwide for its timeless elegance. Inspired by Chinese porcelain and adorned with stylised blue flowers on a white background, the Musselmalet pattern has become a symbol of Danish porcelain history.

Under the guidance of Arnold Krog in the 1880s, the pattern was revitalised, with three distinct variants developed: Full Lace with openwork edging, Half Lace with painted edging, and Plain with an elegant edge decor. Although the pattern is typically blue on a white background, it is also available in black, red, and green. These variations have made Musselmalet a timeless choice for collectors and design enthusiasts alike, offering a style that suits any home.
