Robert Högfeldt – A Collection of Enchanting Watercolours

"I always draw my figures from imagination, not from a model. I sketch with a pencil, ink the lines with a pen, and then possibly add color. Like Brueghel, I aim for an art of our own time, created by the people, for the people." (Quote from Svenskt Konstnärslexikon)

This themed auction presents a small collection consisting of 11 unusually well-executed watercolors and drawings by Robert Högfeldt. All works are highly representative of the artist and are of very high quality. In this imaginative visual world, chubby little trolls, mischievous devils, and other anachronistic figures are depicted in humorous situations. The effort and inventiveness are always portrayed with a gentle satirical touch, which has made the images easy to appreciate and thus long popular among collectors.

Robert Högfeldt was born in 1894 in Eindhoven and spent his youth in Düsseldorf, where he also studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in the early 1900s. Like many other artists, he made study trips across Europe, including to Paris. However, unlike many of his contemporaries, he was not particularly interested in or inspired by modernist painting. Instead, he remained more devoted to satire and fairy-tale illustrations, cultivating a strong interest in the countless physiognomies of the human face – something clearly reflected in his gallery of characters.
