Gerhard Wihlborg – The Magical Österlen

With brush in hand, Gerhard Wihlborg (1897–1982) captured the light and landscapes that define Österlen—a place he returned to again and again throughout his artistic career. Even his interior scenes were inspired by homes in Österlen, a region he found difficult to leave behind. During his study trips to Italy, he was fascinated by the Southern European light, yet remarked with a smile: “It’s damn beautiful—but not as beautiful as Kåseberga.”

Wihlborg studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm during the 1920s, where he developed a strong foundation in classical painting. Yet it was his encounter with the landscapes of Skåne that truly shaped his artistic expression—vibrant, colourful, and deeply rooted in the local scenery.

Wihlborg remained devoted to Österlen throughout his life, and his work enjoyed great popularity for decades. His paintings pulse with life, colour, and presence, portraying rapeseed fields, villages, and coastal views with a sensitivity that is both deeply personal and universally appealing. His art is firmly grounded in the fertile soil of Skåne, yet speaks to audiences far beyond it.

In this themed auction, we present a carefully curated selection of works that reflect Wihlborg’s profound love for Österlen and his distinctive eye for the ever-changing landscape. Discover an artistic legacy that celebrates light, colour, and a sense of place.
