Vlasta Volcano – Transavantgardism

Transavantgarde – “beyond the avant-garde” – emerged in Italy in the late 1970s and became an influential art movement during the 1980s. The movement broke with the prevailing abstraction and opened up a freer relationship with art history.

Vlastimir Mikic Volcano was a central figure on Belgrade’s art scene and within the Transavantgarde movement. He was also a pioneer of digital art in New York, where he was active from 1985 to 2004 and exhibited at, among others, Studio 515, Postmaster Gallery and Knitting Factory. Volcano took part in international exhibitions alongside artists including Marina Abramović. Following his return to Belgrade in 2004, he continued his artistic practice until his death in 2021.

This themed auction presents several of his works, with exhibition histories spanning both Sweden and New York.
