Contemporary Clay: Yixing Pottery from the Bogg Collection

"We were captivated by the variation, the humor, and the curiosity in the design of the teapots, as well as by the extraordinary craftsmanship. That is what inspired us to begin collecting them. Most were acquired during the 1980s at Liulichang in Beijing, at Yixing exhibitions in Shanghai, or in Yixing itself,” says Lennart Bogg.

Lennart and Carina Bogg first arrived in China in November 1983. Lennart worked for UNICEF in China for four years, while Carina was working with a preschool at the Norwegian Embassy. It was only a few years after the end of the Cultural Revolution, during a period when China was opening up its society to renewed the international exchange of art and culture. The Boggs visited exhibitions and met many artists who were eager to establish connections beyond China’s borders. Their art collection gradually took shape and was exhibited at Liljevalchs in Stockholm in the summer of 1989 in the exhibition “Masters from China.”

During their time in China, Carina and Lennart noticed that many artists kept Yixing teapots in their homes and often collaborated with potters in designing them. Yixing represents a unique craft tradition in China, where both men and women—often from generations of artisan families—have practiced their art for centuries. The entire production process remains a true craft, from the design and preparation of the clay to the shaping and firing of the teapot. Remarkably, these methods have remained preserved for hundreds of years.
