More information

In Gösta Sandels' art the crystal clear turns into dreams. The viewer is being led into his magic world that enchants an every day motif. In 1914, Sandels, in the company of his friend Birger Simonsson visited the idyllic town of Kungälv, not far from Gothenburg. The landscape and the small town with the church, the inn and city hall inspired Sandels who saw the people and their manners in a romantic light. Paintings such as “The smithy” and “Quarry in Kungälv” portray scenery from experiences that emotionally touched Sandels. The people of Kungälv walking home from church in black scarves, women gossiping at the square and men discussing daily events, all this Sandels captured in his paintings. They say that his art of description of the region was so convincing that the city of Kungälv started to resemble Gösta Sandels' paintings and not the other way around.
