Bjarne Melgaards konst präglas av spännvidden mellan det personligt upplevda och det fiktiva. Både i måleri och teckning lyckas Melgaard förena målerisk poesi med ett ofta grovt och vilt fabulerande. Hans konst har förärats flertalet separatutställningar, bland de senare kan nämnas De Appel Museum i Amsterdam och den stora retrospektiva utställningen på Astrup Fearnley Museum i Oslo tidigare i år. Hans konst finns representerad runtom i världen, från Moderna museet i Stockholm till Museum of Modern Art i New York.
