Under sent 1990-tal sökte sig Hans Gothlin bort ifrån ett färgsprakande och kontrastrikt måleri mot en mer nedtonad och återhållen färgskala i svart och vitt. Kvadratiska målningar med omsorsfullt pålagd färg vilka ofta presenterades parvis blev nu hans signum.
