A cream-glazed pottery Phoenix-head ewer, Tang dynasty (618-907 AD).

The ovoid body applied on one side with an equestrian archer and on the reverse with a phoenis standing on one leg atop a lotus. Height 33,5 cm.

Restored.

Provenance

From the Collection of Johan Lilliehöök, a large part of his Collection was formed during his years as a Swedish Envoye in Shanghai in the 1920’s.

The design of these vessels was derived from a Sassanian metal flask which came into China with merchants from Iran.
