More information

This painting was completed in 1784, it is the prototype of Wertmüller’s well-known image of Marie Antoinette at Versailles from 1788. There are several versions of varying sizes made between 1788 and 1793. The Queen is depicted in a brown hunting costume with blue and yellow stripes and a Creole hat decorated with roses. The portrait is the only known image of Marie-Antoinette wearing this kind of headdress which had its origins in the French Caribbean.
