The portrait is mentioned in the artist's register under "Notte de tous mes ouvrages que je me suis offert a faire pour mes amis et connaissances et duquels je n'aiaccepté aucun payment" Octobre 1786 - "le petit Campan fils de madame Genet Premier femme de la Reine. En pied carresant le petit chien nommé Aline, dans un jardin Anglais, toile de 40 carré."

Court painter Adolf Ulrik Wertmüller painted this boy the first time in 1785, this portrait is mentioned in his workbook. "Le petit Campan a petit tableau ronde". The following year he also created this portrait with the little boy Henri who was two years old.
The artist was introduced to the family Campan by the swedish Gabriel Lindholm who had arrived at Versailles in 1774 as a tutor to Madame Campans brother. Wertmüller portrayed both Madame Campan and her brother as well as several other members of the family.
Madame Genet-Campan had with her husband, courtier Pierre Dominique Francois Bertholet-Campan only one son, Henri.
