More information

The wealthy merchant Xiang Yuanbian (1525-1590) is known for his unparalleled private collection of painting, calligraphy, ceramics and works of art, many pieces of which are considered masterpieces and are still extant. Unlike most famous art collectors in Chinese history, Xiang Yuanbian was a member of neither the imperial household nor the literati class. Xiang managed to possess objects that were once unobtainable — objects from imperial collections.
