Bolinders grundades 1844 då bröderna Jean och Carl Gerhard Bolinder grundade J. & C. G. Bolinders Mekaniska Verkstad (från 1873 J. & C. G. Bolinders Mekaniska Verkstads AB) på Kungsholmen i Stockholm.
År 1909 flyttade verksamheten till Kallhäll i Järfälla.
