I sitt konstnärskap förhåller sig Stephan Balkenhol till en lång tradition av tredimensionell konst. Efter studier för Ulrich Rüchriem fann han sitt eget eget uttryck i kontrast både till en minimalistiska tradition och till den figurativa skulpturens historia. Med traditionella verktyg som hammare och mejsel växer till synes vanliga män och kvinnor fram ur stora träblock, figurer som han själv refererar till som Everyman.
Balkenhols första figurativa skulpturer kom till i början av 1980-talet. Sedan dess har de pendlat i omfång, från det intima till det publika och omfångsrika. I mjuka träslag, såsom wawa och poppel, tar figurerna form och konstnären lämnar verken med tydliga spår av sin mejsel.
Balkenhols skulpturer har visats i många offentliga miljöer och skapat uppmärksamhet och debatt i städer som London, Paris, Berlin och New York. Balkenhol är känd för den svenska publiken med sina två figurer på styltor, sex meter höga, som sedan 2004 står utanför Chalmers tekniska högskola i Göteborg.
Designer
Stephan Balkenhol is a German sculptor known for his work with sculptures and reliefs. His hallmark is roughly hewn and painted wooden sculptures. He depicts figures, animals and architecture, sometimes adopting a surrealistic styles. The human form is the centrepiece to his works, whereby he has created a basic reference type that he often manipulates. His figures showcase no emotion, rather staring blankly at an unknown point, appearing anonymous and enigmatic. To this day his largest sculpture, a male torso made of cedar wood, stands at a staggering six meters, has remained at Caesar Forum in Rome since 2009.
