Almquist var ursprungligen ornamentbildhuggare. Almquist har gjort dekorativa arbeten för Stockholms Stadshus, Stockholms Konserthus, Svenska Tändsticksaktiebolaget, Västra Trädgårdsgatan, Stockholm och Göteborgs Konstmuseum. Almquist har även gjort en del dekorativa möbler för Föreningen Hantverkets jubileumsutställning år 1925. Ansgar Almquist var även en tid verksam som möbelarkitekt på Nordiska Kompaniet.
