A large seated sculpture of Guandi, Qing dynasty, 17/18th Century.

Modelled seated on a throne, wearing long robes with finely defined armour with ferocious dragons, holding a book in his left hand, the face with a serene expression.

The base with damage, mostly to the front. Wood with some cracks due to dryness of the material.

Guan Yu (died 220), was a general serving under the warlord Liu Bei in the late Eastern Han dynasty. He played a significant role in the civil war that led to the collapse of the dynasty and the establishment of the state of Shu Han – founded by Liu Bei – in the Three Kingdoms period. Guan is respected as an epitome of loyalty and righteousness.
