Gilt bronze. One marked with oval stamp "PAILLARD", two marked "VP" under crown. Height 50 cm.

Victor Paillard (1805-1886), famous sculptor and bronze-maker in Paris. His business, founded in 1830, flourished in the mid-1800s and employed more than a hundred workers. Several of his works were exhibited at exhibitions in France and abroad. For the World Exhibition in London in 1851 Paillard led the casting of the colossal statue of Queen Victoria. In 1855 he made a toilet service for Empress Eugénie. The same year he made Napoleon III's equestrian statue.
