Under 2018 har Luoma bland annat haft separatutställningar på Gallery Taik Persons, Berlin (“Content is a Glimpse of Something”) och på Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery, New York, som även visade hans verk på the Armory Show.
Niko Luoma, Elina Brotherus, Jorma Puranen, Heli Rekula och Ola Kolehmainen tillhör alla en löst sammanhållen grupp som fått namnet The Helsinki School. De har alla, i olika årgångar sedan tidigt 1980-tal, utbildat sig vid välrenommerade Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture där de fick med sig ett konceptuellt och experimentellt förhållningssätt till fotografi. Gruppen har ställt ut tillsammans, i olika konstellationer, vid flera olika tillfällen. Gallery Taik Persons och Finnish Museum of Photography har spelat en stor roll för gruppens utveckling, det var även där som de för första gången ställde ut tillsammans under namnet Helsinki School. Flera av gruppens medlemmar har idag internationella karriärer med separatutställningar runt om i världen. Luoma tog examen från Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture 2003 och har sedan dess även undervisat på skolan. Luoma har sedan han slog igenom mer och mer rört sig mot ett abstrakt uttryck som han uppnår genom en analog teknik där han hundratals gånger exponerar samma negativ för olika variationer av ljus.
