1957 grundar Kantor tillsammans med andra polska konstnärer avantgardegruppen ”The Krakow group” med vilka han arrangerade flera utställningar på Krzysztofory Gallery, det vid tiden mest framstående samtida galleriet i Krakow. Dessa utställningar anses idag som mycket betydande inom Polens konsthistoria. Kantor beskrev själv sina målningar ifrån 1950 och 60-talet som sina innersta hemligheter och deras originalitet gick inte de utländska konstkritikerna obemärkt förbi, 1958 får han sitt internationella genombrott, med flera utställningar däribland i Paris, Basel och på Konstsalongen Samlaren i Stockholm. 1961 blir Kantor inbjuden till att föreläsa på Konsthögskolan i Hamburg och har i och med det en längre ledighet och vistelse i Europa, bl.a. i Sverige. I Sverige representeras Kantor under 1960-talet av Galerie Burén och även senare av Galleri Pierre. Kantor anses idag vara lika betydande för polsk konst som Andy Warhol varit för den amerikanska konstscenen. Inom polsk konsthistoria beskrivs han som ”The best artist of the world from among Polish artists and the most Polish one from among the artists of the world”.
