More information

Marie Cuttoli, born in 1871 and almost the same age as Léger was a private collector and patron of the arts. Marie and her husband Paul Cuttoli built an important private collection of modern French art, particularly by the Cubists in their private home in Paris. The collection included works by Picasso, Braque, Dufy and Léger. Cuttoli was also the founder of Maison Mybor in Paris, a design studio and gallery for interior design, art and fashion. She often collaborated with other gallerists and museums. Cuttoli was instrumental in reviving the Renaissance tradition of weaving carpets based on paintings and sometimes lent works from the private collection for the patterns. Cuttoli commissioned five carpets designed by Fernand Léger for Maison Mybor during 1925-27. The gouache in the auction is a study for one of the first pieces in the series. In the finished carpet the composition is set against an intense yellow background, hence the title Jaune II.
