More information

The 1930s was the big breakthrough for Bror Hjorth. He mainly works in sculpture during this period but the few paintings (only eleven) he creates are very interesting. He moves, from his earlier expressive and primitive works, towards a more naturalistic style. The forms are softer, the colours are cooler and the motifs are more elegant, almost classic.
I the painting ”Skön Anna” (Beautiful Anna) you see Bror Hjorth’s greatness as a portraitist. Energy is added to the strict composition through the horizontal wall cut through by the dramatic, diagonal floor and table. The clear unmixed primary colours that appears all over the painting show Hjorth’s exquisite sence of colours.
