Alistair Frost’s deft paintings have a carefree confidence that belies their subtle complexity. Looking to mass media and everyday life for his imagery, Frost fuses lowbrow, straightforward subject matter with the processes and techniques of high art, painting checkmarks, tools, shapes, and clothing with expressive yet careful attention to color, line, and composition. In works like Metaphors don’t count (2011), he paints in an almost clipart-like style, a fusion that is at once playful and suggestive of the devaluation of art through processes of mass reproduction and proliferation.
