Den 19 december 1908 föddes Gisèle Freund i en judisk familj i Berlin-Schöneberg. Som student i Frankfurt am Main var hon med i en anti-nazistisk motståndsgrupp innan hon 1933 flydde till Paris. Där skrev hon en banbrytande doktorsavhandling om fotografiets historiska roll. Hon arbetade själv som fotograf, specialiserade sig på konstnärsporträtt och använde tidigt färgfilm.
Tack vare kontakten med kvinnorna Sylvia Beach och Adrienne Monnier som drev bokhandeln Shakespeare & Company på rue de l’Odéon i Paris hamnade Gisèle Freund mitt i mellankrigstidens amerikanska författarkoloni på vänstra stranden av floden Seine. Hennes kamera förevigade kända namn som Gertude Stein, Alice B Toklas, Janet Flanner och Djuna Barnes.
