Josef Istler var medlem i Ra-gruppen samt samarbetade med konstnärssammanslutningen Cobra. Han var en drivande kraft för att etablera den informella konsten på den tjeckiska konstscenen. Hans skapande kännetecknas av ett informellt uttryck med rötter i surrealismen.
