A Chinese peach shaped lacquered box, early 20th Century.

Deep relief, carved with a figure scene to the center in a river scape. Around the sides, bats and flowers. Length 14 cm.

Provenance

From the Collection of a Swedish gentleman who was employed at the Gadelius Company and stationed in Japan in the 1950s and 1960s. The collection was built during these years, some items were purchased in Japan, but also on their business trips to Taiwan and Hong Kong.

The peach is among the most important auspicious symbols in Chinese culture and wares made in the form of a peach, clearly recognizable for its asymmetrical heart-shape, were much favoured by the emperors as well as commoners.
