A Japanese six fold screen, Edo period (1603-1868).

Ink and colour on paper. With scenes from court life with women dancing clad in butterlies costumes, groups of people on outings, blossoming cherry trees and elegant pine trees. Measurment 171x376 cm.

Purchased at Auction in Stockholm in the 1980's.

Literature

The scenes are most probably based on the Classic Japanese 11th Century literary work "Tales of Genji" by Murasaki Shikibu.
