1949 befann sig Vera Nilsson i Paris. Det var en ovanligt kall vinter och hon upprördes över polisen som släckte de små eldar som uteliggarna tände för att inte frysa ihjäl. Hon tog med sig sina målarattiraljer och började måla av dessa människor och deras utsatta situation. De kände sig hedrade av denna uppmärksamhet och hennes medkänsla.
