A large sancai glazed roof-tile/decorative sculpture, Qing dynasty (1644-1912).

Dramatically modelled as a dragon, glazed in the sancai colours yellow, green, aubergine and white. Length 61 cm, height 45 cm.

Tail and mane and one tooth with damage. Crazing to glaze.

In ancient Chinese architecture the tiles, curved roof, and dragon acroteria were all typical features of imperial and official buildings. Often the importance of a building could be understood from the way the tiles and the buildings were decorated.
